Court rules coins and ring are treasure trove
VIKING jewellery and 13th century coins found on farmland in two locations in the Isle of Man were declared treasure trove at a coroner’s court hearing on Monday.
A hoard of 66 silver coins was discovered buried in a farmer’s field at Ballasalla, between February and June of last year by metal detectorist John Lewis.
Describing his find as a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience, Mr Lewis told the Manx Independent: ‘I’ve found lots of bits and pieces before but nothing like this.
‘There are people doing this for 40 years and don’t get anything like this. I knew I had something but I wasn’t sure what it was at first because it was covered in mud. I had a great time and I’m very happy about it.’
